RX 480 benchmark with Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 1080p, 1440p, Ultrawide, 4K benchmarks at High Quality

For the most part, the RX 480 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. In terms of memory, the RX 480 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 480, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RX 480 is much more expensive than the R9 380 as it costs a whopping $ 400. Compare this to the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X, which came originally at a price of $ 199, $ 229. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 970 which costs $ 329.

Spec for spec, this RX 480 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the R9 380, by boasting 51.8 % more fps. The RX 480 has 8 GB RAM compared to the R9 380 's 2 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RX 480 blows past the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X and, amazingly, even the R9 390 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 480 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X and it really justifies an upgrade.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 970, the RX 480 was -3.9 % slower. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Spider-Man Remastered, F1 2019, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Battlefield V at 62 fps to 65 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 63 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play World War Z, Fallout 76, Valorant at 62 fps to 101 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 75 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 88 fps to 88 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 88 fps.

For 900p? Both are overkill! As a gaming setup, the i3+480 will consistently beat the i5 and 380x by a huge margin in most games

It's a tough one. The RX 470 is close to the RX 480 performance wise and some games do benefit from high VRAM. For example, I'm playing Forza Motorsport 6: Apex at ultra settings and it really requires 8GB of VRAM for a stutter-free experience on that render setting. I always had problems with Forza Motorsport 6 as it really uses loads of VRAM when playing, my experience has been a lot better since moving to an 8GB graphics card in general. However, most games will be fine with 4GB VRAM and in those games the RX 480 4GB will be easily outperforming the RX 470 8GB.

Each manufacter probably makes small changes to the printed circuit board. Why do you want to know about the PCB? You can flash the bios of the rx480 to make it a 580.https://www.hardocp.com/news/2017/04/24/how_to_flash_your_rx_480_580_stepbystep

The 480 is the best card and the best deal, just avoid Gigabyte this time around as they've been having problems with cooling the 480. I'd go for something from XFX or MSI. Unless you can get the 390 for under $150 from a trusted friend that hasn't beaten it to death for months in a mining rig then there's really no reason to buy a 390.

The difference in performance between a 470 and a 480 of equal memory can be closed by overclocking the 470 by approximately 10%, which is more than doable on an air-cooled solution. The biggest impacts RAM has on card performance is for handling high-res textures and AA. More available video RAM means your card can handle higher-memory textures, and use better AA options. For any game you can buy today, a 4GB card is more than enough, but once 1440p and 4k resolutions become more prevalant, you're gonna want those extra 4GB.For your comparison, I would recommend the 470. The 480 is only a better card if both price and RAM are equal, otherwise the biggest thing the 480 gives you is more overclocking room. Personally, I would only consider a 480 if I had a water-cooling solution to implement on it so I could overclock the piss out of it.
