R9 280X benchmark with Phenom II X6 1055T 1080p, 1440p, Ultrawide, 4K benchmarks at Medium Quality

For the most part, the R9 280X is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. It is worth noting that the R9 280X is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. This combination between R9 280X and AMD Phenom II X6 1055T has less than 15% bottleneck in many games and can cause minor FPS loss. With current 3072 MB RAM, the R9 280X can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

Series R9 280X
Variant AMD Radeon R9 280X
Overall Combination Score 76/100 Very Good

The R9 290 might be the extreme flagship of the latest GCN 1.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most high-end PC gamers. On the other hand, the R9 280X is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 299. AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by high-end prices with performance that knocks on the door of extreme graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 1.0 graphics card inside the R9 280X, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 770, the R9 280X was 8.7 % faster. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Valorant at 86 fps to 86 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 86 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Valorant at 71 fps to 71 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 71 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 61 fps to 61 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 61 fps.
