The GTX 980 might be the high-end flagship of the latest Maxwell 2.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most mid-range PC gamers. On the other hand, the GTX 970 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 329. NVIDIA ’s xx70 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Maxwell 2.0 graphics card inside the GTX 970, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

The GTX 970 is much more cheaper than the GTX 770 as it costs $ 329. Compare this to the GTX 770, which came originally at a price of $ 399. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the R9 290X which costs $ 549. Spec for spec, this GTX 970 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the GTX 770, by boasting 46 % more fps.

The GTX 970 has 4 GB RAM compared to the GTX 770 's 2 GB video memory. In our synthetic benchmarks, the GTX 970 blows past the GTX 770 and, amazingly, even the GTX 780 as well.

Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, R9 290X, the GTX 970 was 1.6 % faster. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The GTX 970 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the GTX 770 and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Battlefield V, Fallout 76, Overwatch 2, World War Z, Apex Legends at 60 fps to 62 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 61 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Valorant at 96 fps to 96 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 96 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 84 fps to 84 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 84 fps.

Critics Reviews

Conclusion The first thing to note about the GTX 970 launch in general is that it is a highly competitive one. While most GTX 780 and R9 290X cards still retails for at least £330 or so (and some ...
The GTX 1070’s stock speed of 1,506MHz is miles ahead of the older card’s 1,050MHz core, and the GTX 1070’s 8GB of GDDR5 rattles along at 8,000MHz – but the GTX 970’s 4GB allocation is ...
At half the price of a GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the GeForce GTX 970 can tempt you into buy a pair of them. With Ultra HD monitors dropping below the $500 mark, a playable Ultra HD gaming PC under $2000 suddenly sounds realistic. Here's why spending 3 grand on a GTX TITAN-Z was a bad idea.
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 specs. The GTX 970 is pared back from the 980 in many ways - core count drops down from 2048 to 1664, while max boost clocks are diminished 1216MHz to 1178MHz.
In a worst case scenario, the GTX 970 will be 19% slower than the GTX 980, but we are willing to bet it'll be quicker than that. Nvidia's pricing scheme for these new Maxwell GPUs already seems off.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 are somewhat similar. The cards share the same 4GB frame buffer and GM204 GPU, but the GTX 970’s GPU is clocked a bit lower and features fewer active SMs ...
Verdict. If you've skipped to the last page to see our conclusion, I'm not going to waste your time: both the $330 GeForce GTX 970 and $550 GeForce GTX 980 represent tremendous, earth shattering ...
The GeForce GTX 970 is one of Nvidia's two latest top-end GPUs, bringing excellent value as a high-end Maxwell-based graphics card. Along with 13 SMMs (equating to 1,664 CUDA cores), it packs the ...
Nvidia shows us what second-gen Maxwell architecture can do with its new GM204 chip and the GeForce GTX 970 and 980 graphics cards that wield it.
The GTX 970 core operates at 1051MHz with a boost clock of 1178MHz, just 3% slower than the GTX 980. The really good news comes when looking at the memory sub-system, which has gone completely ...
Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 v AMD Radeon RX 480 – Specs and technology. AMD has made the unusual decision to debut its Polaris architecture with this mid-range card. There’s a lot to like about the ...
The GeForce GTX 970 was a performance graphics card by NVIDIA, launched in September 2014. Built on the 28 nm process, and based on the GM204 graphics processor, in its GM204-200-A1 variant, the card supports DirectX 12.0.
Compared to the GTX 770 that the GTX 970 replaces, this is a welcome and much needed upgrade from what has been the 2GB VRAM standard that NVIDIA has held to for the last two and a half years.
