Core2 Quad Q9550

Upgrading Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550I only have $175AUD ($135USD) and I'm a huge fan of video editing. I mainly use vegas pro and after fx but i love a little bit of counter strike global offensive in between. My q9550 is quite slow in pre-rendering and rendering projects and I'm using money I've gathered to upgrade. I cannot go over my budget because i simply don't have the money to spend Is the fx6300 a good option or is there something better i could get within my price range? I'm currently using a GTX 650 ti (old i know ahah) but am hopefully getting a GTX msi 950 2gb gaming edition for christmas this year. I have 12 gigs ram, and motherboard will be decided when I find a suitable cpuThanks Ryan

When it comes to video editing, it is recommended to use an i7 Processor at minimum, but as you are on a limited budget, then that cannot happen (Unless you wait longer) and you'll need to get a new motherboard as well, as the LGA775 isn't widely used anymore. And to get a decent AMD CPU, or Intel CPU, that will allow somewhat alright rendering, it would be much over your budget. For example:PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/Z8TBmGPrice breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/Z8TBmG/by_merchant/CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($153.00 @ Centre Com) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($89.00 @ Umart) Total: $242.00Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when availableGenerated by PCPartPicker 2016-09-08 20:06 AEST+1000Or PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/QrXNWZPrice breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/QrXNWZ/by_merchant/CPU: AMD A8-7600 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($106.99 @ Mwave Australia) Motherboard: MSI A58M-E35 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard ($69.00 @ CPL Online) Total: $175.99Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when availableGenerated by PCPartPicker 2016-09-08 20:08 AEST+1000No promises on these being good, but they will be good to play games, but they will be slower when rendering, and may be a little unstable. But you wont be able to get a decent CPU for that price that will render flawlessly. You could always get an i3 with Hyperthreading:PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/yznhFTPrice breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/yznhFT/by_merchant/CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($109.00 @ Storm Computers) Motherboard: ASRock H81M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($68.00 @ CPL Online) Total: $177.00Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when availableGenerated by PCPartPicker 2016-09-08 20:09 AEST+1000This would probably be much more stable, and it is a really good, cheap Intel CPU.

CPU not overclocking (Core 2 Quad Q9550)I am trying to overclock my Intel core 2 quad q9550 cpu from 2.8 to 3.4 GHz but im failing at it.I have read many guides and what not and also the overclocking manual of the cpu but every time i try to overclock my computer reboots and goes back to default clock speed. I have also tried diffrent clock speeds and voltages for my cpu but the same thing happens. Any ideas what to do?

Oh well, that motherboard will be pretty bad for overclocking that chip. Look at trying to overclock to 350Mhz fsb my exerience with a similar board a g31-es2l which had fsb limits of around 360Mhz and the two boards are virtually the same excet for ram support. This really sucks for you due to the chip already running a default fsb of 333Mhz.

Older CPUs are OCd only by altering the BUS. So, the first option in BIOS is to desable "Spread spectrum" so it wont affect the other components. RAM speed is going to be affectet alltough... so, you need to play with the ram ratio aswell (lower it). Then start increasing the bus, i say untill you get 3,2 GHz, run stress tests, monitor temps etc, then rais a bit more to 3,3 - 3,4. Dont alter the core voltage, i think you are fine with default.

Good Core 2 Quad Q9550 Upgrade?Okay, so I have asked this question about 1 year ago but I haven't upgraded since then. This is the year I am positive about upgrading from my Q9550 as their are bottlenecks in games. Frames drop from 50 to 20 or 30. I gave a GTX 760 @ 2GB and it's a good GPU but my CPU is bringing it down. I have been thinking about this upgrade for a year now and I was positive to upgrade to core i5/i7 but somehow my mind changed and I suddenly want to upgrade to FX-8350. I know it's late and it's been 2.5 years since launch but it seems like bang for my buck. Will I notice any differences between the FX-8350 and my Q9550? Will it be a good upgrade? Or is the Intel core i5 4690k/i7 4790k much better and worth the extra $50-100. BTW, I live in Canada so prices here are higher and deals are much lower. The i7-4790k is $400 while the i5 is $300. Tax in ontario is %13 so it adds up. Is that $100-$200 Intel more worth it than the FX or not? No budget, just want to know if the FX is worth it and the extra money for Intel isn't.

I'd agree with InvalidError, either will be a performance improvement but the i5 would be better than the 8350. As far as prices being higher in canada they're really not when you factor the conversion rate. For instance a 4690k is listed as $270 canadian dollars, or $222 usd. It balances out. I'm not certain of tax but even the highest end i5 right now is $270 free shipping from newegg canada. Not sure where you're planning to buy it for $300. The 8350 is $210 from ncixus so it's a $60 canadian difference ($50 usd difference) not $200.It's up to you whether you think it's worth it or not. With skylake coming up toward the end of the year it may be worthwhile waiting for it. Even amd is supposed to have something early 2016 rather than buying into an amd platform that hasn't changed much the past 4yrs. You'd be buying into the tail end of it on it's way out going to the 8350 now. Skylake is rumored to have possibly ddr3 and ddr4 compatibility. Unless you're using ddr3 now (most likely ddr2) if you have to upgrade your ram anyway it may be worth skipping ddr3 at this point and going with ddr4 so you're not buying into ram that's starting to be fazed out.I went with the i5 as well and have been really happy with it coming from a core 2 duo. I also made the transition 5mo ago though, had I waited til now I might have just waited for skylake. Even going with the current i5 I'm sure it'll last me a good 4yrs or more. My e8400 lasted me a good 6yrs.

If you set your ram to 667 speed manually it shouldn't scale like that.
