Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RTX 4090 makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RTX 4080 by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RTX 4080 could be the better value choice in the short term. Upgrading from RTX 4080 to RTX 4090 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware.

Spec for spec, this RTX 4090 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3090, by boasting 44.5 % more fps. Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, RX 7900 XT, the RTX 4090 was 21.9 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4090 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3090 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 80 fps to 120 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 106 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 72 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 81 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 72 fps to 92 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 79 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080

Spec for spec, this RTX 4080 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3080, by boasting 32.8 % more fps. The RTX 4080 has 16 GB RAM compared to the RTX 3080 's 10 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4080 blows past the RTX 3080, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and, amazingly, even the RTX 3090 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4080 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3080, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 69 fps to 104 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 92 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 63 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 63 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 68 fps.
