Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RTX 4090 makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RX 7900 XTX by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RX 7900 XTX could be the better value choice in the short term. Upgrading from RX 7900 XTX to RTX 4090 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 7900 XTX .

Spec for spec, this RTX 4090 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3090, by boasting 44.5 % more fps. Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, RX 7900 XT, the RTX 4090 was 21.9 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4090 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3090 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 80 fps to 120 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 106 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 72 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 81 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 72 fps to 92 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 79 fps.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Spec for spec, this RX 7900 XTX leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 6950 XT, by boasting 21.1 % more fps. The RX 7900 XTX has 24 GB RAM compared to the RX 6950 XT 's 16 GB video memory.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 7900 XTX consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 6950 XT and it really justifies an upgrade. Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, RTX 4090, the RX 7900 XTX was -9.7 % slower.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Microsoft Flight Simulator, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 70 fps to 105 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 94 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 63 fps to 81 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 71 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Microsoft Flight Simulator, Atomic Heart, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 62 fps to 74 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 67 fps.
