Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RTX 4090 makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RX 6800 XT by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RX 6800 XT could be the better value choice in the short term. The RTX 4090 is faster by 54% for 1440p gaming. However, RX 6800 XT is still capable of producing more than 60 frames per second. For 1080p games, upgrading from RX 6800 XT to RTX 4090 is not worth it if targeting 60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 6800 XT .

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090

Spec for spec, this RTX 4090 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3090, by boasting 44.5 % more fps. Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, RX 7900 XT, the RTX 4090 was 21.9 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4090 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3090 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 80 fps to 120 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 106 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 72 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 81 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 72 fps to 92 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 79 fps.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

The RX 6900 XT might be the extreme flagship of the latest RDNA 2.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most high-end PC gamers. On the other hand, the RX 6800 XT is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 649. The RX 6800 XT is much more expensive than the RX 5700 XT as it costs a whopping $ 649. Compare this to the RX 5700 XT, which came originally at a price of $ 399. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the RTX 3080 which costs $ 699.

Spec for spec, this RX 6800 XT leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 5700 XT, by boasting 92.3 % more fps. The RX 6800 XT has 16 GB RAM compared to the RX 5700 XT 's 8 GB video memory.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, RTX 3080, the RX 6800 XT was 1.6 % faster. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 6800 XT consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 5700 XT and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play The Last of Us Part I, Forspoken, Atomic Heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy at 65 fps to 85 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 73 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Metro Exodus, GreedFall, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Godfall at 60 fps to 61 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 60 fps.
