Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RTX 4080 makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RX 7900 XT by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RX 7900 XT could be the better value choice in the short term. Upgrading from RX 7900 XT to RTX 4080 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080

Spec for spec, this RTX 4080 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3080, by boasting 32.8 % more fps. The RTX 4080 has 16 GB RAM compared to the RTX 3080 's 10 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4080 blows past the RTX 3080, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and, amazingly, even the RTX 3090 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4080 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3080, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 69 fps to 104 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 92 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Starfield, Immortals of Aveum, Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator at 63 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 63 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 68 fps.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT

The RX 7900 XT is much more cheaper than the RX 6950 XT as it costs $ 899. Compare this to the RX 6950 XT, which came originally at a price of $ 1099. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the RTX 4080 which costs $ 1199. Spec for spec, this RX 7900 XT leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 6950 XT, by boasting 10.1 % more fps.

The RX 7900 XT has 20 GB RAM compared to the RX 6950 XT 's 16 GB video memory. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 7900 XT consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 6950 XT and it really justifies an upgrade.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, RTX 4080, the RX 7900 XT was -5.3 % slower. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II at 64 fps to 96 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 85 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Remnant II, The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator, The Last of Us Part I, Forspoken at 64 fps to 81 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 74 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, A Plague Tale: Requiem at 64 fps to 75 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps.
