Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RTX 4080 makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RTX 4070 by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RTX 4070 could be the better value choice in the short term. The RTX 4080 is faster by 36% for 1440p gaming. However, RTX 4070 is still capable of producing more than 60 frames per second. For 1080p games, upgrading from RTX 4070 to RTX 4080 is not worth it if targeting 60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is much better for RTX 4070 .

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

The RTX 4080 might be the high-end flagship of the latest Ada Lovelace set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most mid-range PC gamers. On the other hand, the RTX 4070 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 599. Spec for spec, this RTX 4070 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3070, by boasting 30.5 % more fps.

The RTX 4070 has 12 GB RAM compared to the RTX 3070 's 8 GB video memory. In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4070 blows past the RTX 3070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and, amazingly, even the RTX 3080 as well.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4070 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Immortals of Aveum, Microsoft Flight Simulator, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II, The Last of Us Part I at 69 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 78 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forspoken, The Last of Us Part I, Atomic Heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at 64 fps to 78 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Halo Infinite at 63 fps to 66 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080

Spec for spec, this RTX 4080 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3080, by boasting 32.8 % more fps. The RTX 4080 has 16 GB RAM compared to the RTX 3080 's 10 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4080 blows past the RTX 3080, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and, amazingly, even the RTX 3090 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Atomic Heart, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Marvel's Avengers, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Borderlands 3 at 63 fps to 80 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 68 fps.
