Our Verdict: Upgrading from RTX 4070 to RTX 3090 Ti is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RTX 4070 .

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070

The RTX 4080 might be the high-end flagship of the latest Ada Lovelace set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most mid-range PC gamers. On the other hand, the RTX 4070 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 599. Spec for spec, this RTX 4070 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 3070, by boasting 30.5 % more fps.

The RTX 4070 has 12 GB RAM compared to the RTX 3070 's 8 GB video memory. In our synthetic benchmarks, the RTX 4070 blows past the RTX 3070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and, amazingly, even the RTX 3080 as well.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 4070 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 3070, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Immortals of Aveum, Microsoft Flight Simulator, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II, The Last of Us Part I at 69 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 78 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forspoken, The Last of Us Part I, Atomic Heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at 64 fps to 78 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 70 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Halo Infinite at 63 fps to 66 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti

The RTX 3090 Ti is much more expensive than the RTX 2080 Ti as it costs a whopping $ 1999. Compare this to the RTX 2080 Ti, which came originally at a price of $ 1299. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the RX 6900 XT which costs $ 999. Spec for spec, this RTX 3090 Ti leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RTX 2080 Ti, by boasting 61.8 % more fps.

The RTX 3090 Ti has 24 GB RAM compared to the RTX 2080 Ti 's 11 GB video memory. Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, RX 6900 XT, the RTX 3090 Ti was 4.4 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RTX 3090 Ti consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RTX 2080 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play The Callisto Protocol, Microsoft Flight Simulator, The Last of Us Part I, Forspoken, Atomic Heart at 63 fps to 84 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 73 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Borderlands 3, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Halo Infinite at 68 fps to 69 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 69 fps.
