Our Verdict: Upgrading from GTX 780 to GTX 1060 6GB is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for GTX 1060 6GB .

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

The GTX 1070 might be the mid-range flagship of the latest Pascal set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most entry-level PC gamers. On the other hand, the GTX 1060 6GB is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 254. NVIDIA ’s xx60 cards have always been defined by entry-level prices with performance that knocks on the door of mid-range graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Pascal graphics card inside the GTX 1060 6GB, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

The GTX 1060 6GB is much more expensive than the GTX 960 as it costs a whopping $ 254. Compare this to the GTX 960, which came originally at a price of $ 199. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the RX 580 which costs $ 229. Spec for spec, this GTX 1060 6GB leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the GTX 960, by boasting 76.3 % more fps.

The GTX 1060 6GB has 6 GB RAM compared to the GTX 960 's 2 GB video memory. In our synthetic benchmarks, the GTX 1060 6GB blows past the GTX 960 and, amazingly, even the GTX 970 as well.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The GTX 1060 6GB consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the GTX 960 and it really justifies an upgrade. Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, RX 580, the GTX 1060 6GB was -6.2 % slower.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Hitman 2, Apex Legends, F1 2019, Overwatch 2, Spider-Man Remastered at 61 fps to 67 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 64 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Valorant at 105 fps to 105 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 105 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 91 fps to 91 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 91 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780

The good news is, with the release of the GTX 780 Ti, the GTX 780 's price is getting more discount. The GTX 780 is much more expensive than the GTX 680 as it costs a whopping $ 649. Compare this to the GTX 680, which came originally at a price of $ 499. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the HD 7970 GHz Edition which costs $ 499.

GTX 1060 6GB vs GTX 780 with i7-6700K vs i7-3770K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings
GTX 1060 6GB vs GTX 780 with i7-6700K vs i7-3770K at 1440p and ultra vs ultra settings
GTX 1060 6GB vs GTX 780 with i7-6700K vs i7-3770K at 4K and ultra vs ultra settings

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB / i7-6700K

At 1440p, GTX 1060 6GB can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the GTX 1060 6GB is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for GTX 1060 6GB against the competition in budget mid-range cards. In terms of memory, the GTX 1060 6GB 's 6144 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 / i7-3770K

For the most part, the GTX 780 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. It is worth noting that the GTX 780 is a very power hungry card and requires a decent power supply unit. This combination between GTX 780 and Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz has less than 8% bottleneck in many games and is perfect match to avoid FPS loss. Deciding whether to invest so much money in a high-end GPU like GTX 780 requires careful thought. This combination between GTX 780 and Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50GHz is a perfect match to avoid FPS loss. With current 3072 MB RAM, the GTX 780 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

1060 6GB will be a tad better than a single 780. Plus it has more VRAM which can help with certain settings/resolutions in games. Both options are solid for 1080p. I would say get the 1060 6GB; slightly better performance than a single 780, more VRAM, and SLI is finickey and doesn't work with a lot of games, so the second 780 will be wasted some of the time.

Hi, so the deal is plain and simple: gtx 780 ti vs 1060, paired with a 550w psu and an i5 8400. Which one and why?

1060 imo because in some games it slightly edges out the 780ti, and uses less power and is bit more efficient.

Should i upgrade my gtx 780 to a gtx 1060. i am looking at a new gpu anyway and dont really want to spend anything more than the cost of a gtx 1060

Well, it would be about 30% faster roughly with the 6GB version. The 3GB version probably wouldn't be worth it.You would mostly be gaining memory bandwidth, memory size, and all the architectural improvements.Ideally you should go for a 1070 to see a significant performance increase.

Hi guys.. I'm planning to change my VGA card. Which one is good guys, GTX 780 Ti or GTX 1060 6GB? I'm using C4D, 3ds max, sketchup and vray for rendering. Thanks a lot if you can help me out Cheers

Go for the GTX 1060, it not only has double the VRAM of that the GTX 780 Ti's, but it's got driver support, which means better performance in rendering. Also, don't ever go for the GTX 690, it's (or was) VERY expensive for absolutely no reason. (Unless if you've mistaken it for the GTX 960)

Well my friend has a gtx 780 with an i7-3770 16 gb ram.....He is currently pissed off by the performance simply because he is playibg new titles like battlefield 1 titanfall 2 forza.....He asked me if its worth the upgrade well I told him that there will be better performance but not that huge.So is it worth it or should he get a gtx 1070?Any help is appreciated!!

I don't know. But since a GTX 1060 is equivalent to a GTX 970 (overclocked) or GTX 980 (stock), I felt that the video below would be a good comparison of a GTX 780 vs 1060. This opinion of mine is a rough estimate and I have no numeric methodology to back it up. But I'm guessing that the GTX 1060 would gain your friend 15-20 FPS higher in 1080p resolution in many games. In games that are more CPU intensive (e.g. Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, BF1) I'd guess a 12 FPS increase going from a GTX 780 to GTX 1060. Like I said, this is a rough guess.Joker Productions: GTX 780 vs 970 | 2016 Framerate Comparison ! 0:37 to skip music intro! 2:50 to jump to benchmarkshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgbvqWpJAhY
