Our Verdict: With some tuning, the RX 7900 XT makes the most sense for gamers with 4K monitors and it is better than RX 6800 XT by a margin. Though serious gamers hardly play at 4k. For everyone else, especially those on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, the RX 6800 XT could be the better value choice in the short term. Upgrading from RX 6800 XT to RX 7900 XT is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware.

AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT

The RX 6900 XT might be the extreme flagship of the latest RDNA 2.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most high-end PC gamers. On the other hand, the RX 6800 XT is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 649. The RX 6800 XT is much more expensive than the RX 5700 XT as it costs a whopping $ 649. Compare this to the RX 5700 XT, which came originally at a price of $ 399. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the RTX 3080 which costs $ 699.

Spec for spec, this RX 6800 XT leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 5700 XT, by boasting 92.3 % more fps. The RX 6800 XT has 16 GB RAM compared to the RX 5700 XT 's 8 GB video memory.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, RTX 3080, the RX 6800 XT was 1.6 % faster. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 6800 XT consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 5700 XT and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Microsoft Flight Simulator, Immortals of Aveum, The Callisto Protocol, Remnant II, The Last of Us Part I at 68 fps to 85 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 75 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play The Last of Us Part I, Forspoken, Atomic Heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Hogwarts Legacy at 65 fps to 85 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 73 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Metro Exodus, GreedFall, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Godfall at 60 fps to 61 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 60 fps.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT

The RX 7900 XT is much more cheaper than the RX 6950 XT as it costs $ 899. Compare this to the RX 6950 XT, which came originally at a price of $ 1099. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the RTX 4080 which costs $ 1199. Spec for spec, this RX 7900 XT leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 6950 XT, by boasting 10.1 % more fps.
