Our Verdict: Upgrading from RX 580 to GTX 980 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 580 .

AMD Radeon RX 580

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 580, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RX 580 is much more cheaper than the RX 480 as it costs $ 229. Compare this to the RX 480, which came originally at a price of $ 400. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 1060 6GB which costs $ 254.

Spec for spec, this RX 580 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 480, by boasting 19.4 % more fps. Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 1060 6GB, the RX 580 was 6.6 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 580 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 480 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Final Fantasy XV, Apex Legends, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, F1 2019, Overwatch 2 at 62 fps to 68 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, World War Z, Battlefield V, Valorant at 64 fps to 107 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 74 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 93 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 93 fps.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980

The good news is, with the release of the GTX 980 Ti, the GTX 980 's price is getting more discount. The GTX 980 is much more cheaper than the GTX 780 as it costs $ 549. Compare this to the GTX 780, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, which came originally at a price of $ 649, $ 699. Meanwhile, the AMD closest equivalent card is the R9 Nano which costs $ 649.

Spec for spec, this GTX 980 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the GTX 780, by boasting 32.3 % more fps. The GTX 980 has 4 GB RAM compared to the GTX 780 's 3 GB video memory.

Compared to its AMD 's closest rival, R9 Nano, the GTX 980 was 3.8 % faster. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The GTX 980 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the GTX 780, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti and it really justifies an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Hitman 3, Final Fantasy XV, Godfall, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Guardians of the Galaxy at 61 fps to 62 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 62 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Forza Horizon 4, Overwatch 2, Strange Brigade, Fallout 76 at 61 fps to 67 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 63 fps.

RX 580 vs GTX 980 with i7-7700K vs i7-4770K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 580 vs GTX 980 with i7-7700K vs i7-4770K at 1440p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 580 vs GTX 980 with i7-7700K vs i7-4770K at 4K and ultra vs ultra settings

AMD Radeon RX 580 / i7-7700K

At 1440p, RX 580 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the RX 580 is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for RX 580 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. In terms of memory, the RX 580 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 / i7-4770K

At 1440p, GTX 980 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. This combination between GTX 980 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz has less than 8% bottleneck in many games and is perfect match to avoid FPS loss. This combination between GTX 980 and Intel Core i7-4770K @ 3.50GHz is a perfect match to avoid FPS loss. With current 4096 MB RAM, the GTX 980 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

In DX 12 Radeons are generally better then NVidia cards, that's known fact. In DX 11 games, it would be 980 that's better, but like I wrote before, only slightly. Either way, both cards are good, so it's win-win situation. If warranty is important factor for you, then indeed going for 580 might sound better.

Hello ! I have rx 480 and its broke . Soo I nees buy new card. I play games on FullHD . I like play on max setting (high or better ) on 60fps (or better) . I like to play like 2-3 year games and then buy new one .I buy r9 280 3 years ago and it was great for me . I want that from new card. Price go like this : Gtx1060 6gb < fxf rx 580 8gb = gainward gtx980 < G1 gtx980ti385$ <395$ =395$ (maybe i get 980 cheaper ) <485$ for 980tiThat all new card except 980ti but it has garanty .

How did it break? Are you RMA'ing?I'm not understanding what you're trying to spell out price-wise though. The 980TI is the strongest card there, at the expense of power draw etc. It competes more closely with a 1070 than it does with a 1060. 980TI>1060/980>580 performance. The 1060 is likely going to reflect the best "bang for your buck" though - but if a 980TI can be had for similar to 1060 money, then that would be my choice.I assume the pricing for a 580 makes it a non-starter, given crypto mining makes it much more expensiv.e

I have a chance to buy either card for the same low price from someone I know. Neither card has been used very much. And neither card has been overclocked or used for mining. Both are 4GB DDR5. It will go in a system with a Ryzen 3-1300X, 16GB RAM, and a Corsair TX650M PSU.I can't make up my mind.RX-580: https://www.powercolor.com/product?id=1496737702GTX 980: https://us.msi.com/Graphics-card/GTX-980-GAMING-4G.html#hero-overview

Which is cheaper? They perform very similarly. The RX 580 will beat out the 980 in a lot of DX12 and vulkan games, however the 980 will win in most DX11 games. The RX 580 will likely do better in future games so I would probably opt for that assuming prices are the same. However I would think with the current mining craze (something the RX 580 is much better at) that the RX 580 would be a lot more expensive even used.
