Our Verdict: Upgrading from RX 480 to RX 580 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 580 .

AMD Radeon RX 580

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 580, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RX 580 is much more cheaper than the RX 480 as it costs $ 229. Compare this to the RX 480, which came originally at a price of $ 400. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 1060 6GB which costs $ 254.

Spec for spec, this RX 580 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 480, by boasting 19.4 % more fps. Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 1060 6GB, the RX 580 was 6.6 % faster.

Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 580 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 480 and it really justifies an upgrade. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Final Fantasy XV, Apex Legends, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, F1 2019, Overwatch 2 at 62 fps to 68 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 65 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, World War Z, Battlefield V, Valorant at 64 fps to 107 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 74 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 93 fps to 93 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 93 fps.

RX 580 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 580 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 1440p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 580 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 4K and ultra vs ultra settings

AMD Radeon RX 580 / i7-7700K

At 1440p, RX 580 can hit 50-60 fps on pretty much everything at ultra, just without antialiasing, less ambient occlusion and turned down shadows. It is clear that the RX 580 is a significantly more capable high-end card that can play AAA titles at 1080p/1440p with 50-60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for RX 580 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. In terms of memory, the RX 580 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

AMD Radeon RX 480 / i7-6700K

For the most part, the RX 480 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. In terms of memory, the RX 480 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

Can a RX 580 be crossfired with a RX 480?My question is purely academic. I don't yet own either of these cards, but I would just like to know.

Yes, it should. It is the same exact card as the 480 with some clock speed tweaks.

Which of the two would be a better buy?Purpose : 1080p GamingWant to get the best bang for buck.PS This would be the first buy and not an upgrade from the 400 Series.

For everyday performance, there will be little if any difference between a 480/4, a 580/4 and a 480/8. They are basically the same card, all in the *80 performance range. You'd not notice or care that the 580 might get 5? Fps more, when you are already capable of fps up in the 100's+, beyond most standard monitors refresh. Detail settings will be identical. The difference between the /4 and /8 comes into play only in certain games where they are optimized for higher vram. And it's a big difference. It's enough that it'll make or break a game at the detail settings you want. A massively detailed game like Witcher 3 or GTA:V, that's extremely fluid and fast moving is going to get bogged down at maximum settings on the 4G cards. You'll not only suffer fps loss, but to reverse the affects you'll need to drop detail settings. In the simpler, smaller games, that are more cpu dependent like WoW or flight Sims etc, it won't be an issue at all. Having the extra vram isn't going to hurt at all, other than a few $ from the wallet. Not having the extra vram could possibly hurt in the long run if your gaming styles tend towards games requiring high vram. As far as DX goes, 11 is different than 12, a lot more so than between 10 and 11. Most nvidia cards are designed around taking massive advantage of DX 11 and prior because that's what was the major avi of the games written. With DX12, those algorithms actually take better advantage of AMD's architecture, so it isn't so much that nvidia is not still doing its best, it's just that amd is finally catching a break and the card performance per slot is closing the gap. Back in the day, nvidia mostly had 3Gb cards for DX11, AMD was using 4Gb cards just to try and equalize the battle between like cards. Today, with DX12 titles, those older 4Gb amd cards are actually doing better now, the cards haven't changed, just the way they are used internally. With the 480/580 essentially being the same card, there won't be any real performance differences, just the little things like running slightly cooler or using less power, when judged against the exact same model

For a card that barely surpasses the gtx 1060, it costs around 200-300 dollars more. Why? I remember them being a reasonable 200-300 dollars but why are they hovering around the 400-500 point now?

Presumably they are expensive as they are selling out from mainstream retailers due to a new surge in mining activity. This leaves a niche for 3rd parties to ramp up the price of the cards.http://www.pcgamer.com/blame-cryptocurrency-miners-for-scarcity-of-radeon-rx-580-and-570-cards/

Anyone know how that will work out?Thinking of buying a new graphic card while waiting for Vega, but my boyfriend got a rx480. So was wondering if I could give him my Rx580 and crossfire with rx480 when i get the Vega card?

Already took a look at the Crossfire compatability chart on AMDs website?http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Crossfire-Chart.aspxIt's a bit outdated by now, but I hotpe they will update it.Amd was always a bit looser on the requirements for pairings than nVidia. So your chances are high. It is even possible to crossfire a 8GB RX 480 with a 4GB RX 480 or a RX 480 with a RX 470 or a HD 7770 with a R7 250X.

The link above recommending 500 watts was done with a factory OC (MSI). The card, with factory OC only drew 191 watts w/ factory OC at the PSI recommendation and that was with an overclocked 5960x as the CPU which can pull 230 watts ... his CPU draws only 84 watts peak so that would him almost an extra 140 or so watts that goes away in their test191 GPU + 84 CPU + 35 Hi end MoBo + 40 everything else = 350 watts that's 37% headroom, which falls in between the 25 - 50% rule of thumb
