Our Verdict: Upgrading from RX 570 to RX 480 is not recommended as it is less than 30% of improvement in performance. In general, a reasonable upgrade is between 30% and 50% or more to justify the purchase of new hardware. The price/performance ratio is much better for RX 570 .

AMD Radeon RX 570

The RX 580 might be the mid-range flagship of the latest GCN 4.0 set of graphics cards, but their prices keep them out of the reach of most entry-level PC gamers. On the other hand, the RX 570 is closer to being reasonably affordable at a price tag of $ 169. AMD ’s xx70 cards have always been defined by entry-level prices with performance that knocks on the door of mid-range graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 570, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

Spec for spec, this RX 570 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the RX 470, by boasting 12.7 % more fps. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 570 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the RX 470 and it really justifies an upgrade.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 1060 3GB, the RX 570 was -6.4 % slower. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Spider-Man Remastered, Fallout 76, Overwatch 2, Apex Legends, Battlefield V at 60 fps to 71 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 64 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Valorant at 98 fps to 98 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 98 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 85 fps to 85 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 85 fps.

AMD Radeon RX 480

AMD ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by mid-range prices with performance that knocks on the door of high-end graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the GCN 4.0 graphics card inside the RX 480, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend. The RX 480 is much more expensive than the R9 380 as it costs a whopping $ 400. Compare this to the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X, which came originally at a price of $ 199, $ 229. Meanwhile, the NVIDIA closest equivalent card is the GTX 970 which costs $ 329.

Spec for spec, this RX 480 leapfrogs its direct predecessor, the R9 380, by boasting 51.8 % more fps. The RX 480 has 8 GB RAM compared to the R9 380 's 2 GB video memory.

In our synthetic benchmarks, the RX 480 blows past the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X and, amazingly, even the R9 390 as well. Fortunately, gaming performance was quite impressive. The RX 480 consistently delivers great frame rate increases over the R9 380, AMD Radeon R9 380X and it really justifies an upgrade.

Compared to its NVIDIA 's closest rival, GTX 970, the RX 480 was -3.9 % slower. For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Spider-Man Remastered, F1 2019, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, Battlefield V at 62 fps to 65 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 63 fps.

For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play World War Z, Fallout 76, Valorant at 62 fps to 101 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 75 fps. For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Valorant at 88 fps to 88 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 88 fps.

RX 570 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 1080p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 570 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 1440p and ultra vs ultra settings
RX 570 vs RX 480 with i7-7700K vs i7-6700K at 4K and ultra vs ultra settings

AMD Radeon RX 570 / i7-7700K

For the most part, the RX 570 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. It appears that the RX 570 is a more capable mid-range card that can play AAA titles at 1080p with 60 frames per second. The price/performance ratio is excellent for RX 570 against the competition in budget mid-range cards. With current 4096 MB RAM, the RX 570 can have very few memory-related bottlenecks in more modern games.

For the most part, the RX 480 is still capable of playing modern games, but you would have to reduce settings to sustain those higher framerates. If keeping graphics quality settings closer to ultra or high is important, there are a few options for upgrades. In terms of memory, the RX 480 's 8192 MB RAM is more than enough for modern games and should not cause any bottlenecks.

RX 480 obviouslyeven with the RX 5XX refresh, the RX X80 still had more resource available than the RX X70

Does the rx 570 4gb matches rx 480 8gb performance and when overclocked is 1-2 fps faster in some titles. Which will be the best buy for 1080p ultra??And there are mixed reviews where in some rx 480 8gb rocks performance more than 570 and in some the opposite so help me decide which one to go.

In just about every benchmark I've seen, an RX 480 8GB outperforms an RX 570. Maybe an overclocked 570 could outperform a reference 480, but an overclocked 480 with a decent cooler should almost always have the advantage. An RX 570 should perform roughly in between an RX 470 and 480. Most 8GB RX 480s will of course cost a bit more though. There's also the 4GB RX 580 and 480 to think about though. They have their memory clocked a bit slower than the 8GB models, but will probably also outperform an RX 570. I haven't really seen any benchmarks comparing the 4GB 580 to the 570 yet though. They're not exactly the same cards as the previous generation, as they are most notably designed for higher clocks, but they are extremely similar in design.

Im going to build my first pc in about a month and with the new graphic cards being released I'm wondering if I should get the rx480 or the new rx570 (which rn is $20 cheaper than the rx480)This is my current build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6mQ7qk

I'd get which ever one was least expensive. Though one may be technically faster than the other, the reality is they are both in the same performance category. It's not like one is going to give you 60fps at 1080p in a game where the other one maxes out at 45fps.

Hi guys! I want to buy one of those cards, but i don't know who's the really best for gaming in 1080p, for today and the next years. In benchs and reviews, they go very very similar, and in my country they have the same prices..I have a i5 7400 with 8gb ram. What's the best deal? Thanks for your opinions!

They are the same class of performance, so I would look at the cooling and power usage as the deciding factor. Plus brand too, one brand may have a better reputation than the other.

Hello,I'm going to upgrade my ancient pc. I've decided to go with the components given below-Core i5-7500,Gigabyte B-250M D3H,Corsair Vengeance LPX 8gb 2400 bus ram.One more thing I should mention is that my monitor is 720p.But I can't seem to decide which GPU to buy.At first, I decided to buy the MSI gtx 1050 ti 4gt oc, which costs 178.725$ in my country. But it went out of market.Still there are other models- Gigabyte g1(199$), ASUS Expedition (200$). Should I buy any of these 2. I heard in an YouTube video that these 2 are overpriced for a 1050 ti.And that's why I'm currently considering 4 different options-1. Rx 570 4gb (Sapphire Nitro+)= 261.401$2. Rx 470 4gb (Sapphire Nitro+)= 227.358$3. Rx 480 4gb (Gigabyte G1 gaming vr.)= 267.474$4. Gtx 1060 3gb (Gigabyte oc)= 227$I would really appreciate it if you guys could explain the right, compatible, bang for my buck option for my rig.

My personal opinion from what i heard don't go with GIGABYTE, most reliable brands are EVGA, MSI and SAPPHIRE. For your config i'd rather choose the RX 570 4GB since it's best value for money and also more future proof when compared to 1060 3gb.
