i3-540
  • The i3-540 is more power efficient and generates less heat.
i5-10600K
  • The i5-10600K has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
  • The i5-10600K has more cores. The benefit of having more cores is that the system can handle more threads. Each core can handle a separate stream of data. This architecture greatly increases the performance of a system that is running concurrent applications.
  • The i5-10600K has more threads. Larger programs are divided into threads (small sections) so that the processor can execute them simultaneously to get faster execution.
  • For some games, a cpu with a higher clock speed, or in a technical name IPC (Instructions per clock), has better results than other CPU's with higher core count and lower core speed.
  • The i5-10600K has a higher turbo clock boost. Turbo Boost is a CPU feature that will run CPU clock speed faster than its base clock, if certain conditions are present. It will enable older software that runs on fewer cores, to perform better on newer hardware. Since games are software too, it is also applicable to them.
  • The i5-10600K has a smaller process size. The faster a transistor can toggle on and off, the faster it can do work. And transistors that turn on and off with less energy are more efficient, reducing the operating power, or “dynamic power consumption,” required by a processor.

Old core 2 duo vs I3 540?My friend has a pretty old Core 2 duo in his machine, He won't tell me exactly which model but I'm sure it's a dual core one manufactured at 65nm , I'm not too familiar with the core 2 duo series as I didn't really get into computers back then, but do you think my I3 540 will top it? I'm asking this because I'm replacing my processor + Mobo and he said he may buy it from me. Sorry there's not much detailing going on, If you really need me to I'll ask him to give me the full on specs as soon as I can.

Here's another link: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-wolfdale-yorkfield-comparison,3487.htmlThe i3 540 should perform similarly to the Ivy Bridge G2020...which is not a lot of difference, if you ask me. Sure, the Wolfdale mentioned in that article is faster than the Conroe your friend has, but overclocking the Conroe would get it to too small of a margin to buy such a chip. If he wants to buy it, let him, as it will be a modest step up, but make sure he doesn't expect the moon.

I3 540 Overclock Temperature checkhello i overclocked my cpu to 3.6 ghz Computer specs :gtx 660Motherboard : asus p7h55-m lx4 RamCpu : i3 540When i play Bf3 my temperature can go up to 65-67Cwhen idle 39-43now my question is if that ok temps?picture from RealTemp after bf3 gamehttp://i.imgur.com/6steXad.png?1my second question you can see in the top its says 158 x 23 is that ok?

Those temps are fine. I assume you're using the stock Intel cooler? The 158 x 23 is just your base clock and multiplier. When you times them together you get your processor's frequency and in this case, 3634Mhz is fine.

i3 540 IGPU on overwatchHey so me and my friends are planning on buying overwatch this october. But the problem lies in my computer.I will only have enough money for one upgrade by the 1st quarter of 2017,its either gonna be a better cpu or a better graphics card. Can i play overwatch using an i5 6500's integrated graphics or do i upgrade to an rx 480 ?i currently have an i3 540 and ati radeon hd 6500 and i dont want to be left in the dark D; Thanks ...

Looking at the specs, it looks to me like the requirements are more graphics than cpu.https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7636I doubt that you would find integrated graphics suitable. The recommended graphics are somewhat less than RX480.More like GTX660, GTX950, RX460.Your I3-540 is at least as strong as the recommended X3 phenom.

The i3 is a newer architecture with a higher clockspeed, I would say it is most likely the better chip. The only thing the Xeon has is 4 real cores though the i3 has hyperthreading which should make up the difference. The Xeon would also require a different motherboard as it's a socket LGA 771 chip while you have a LGA 1156 board.

i3 540 to i7 870 slow?Ok so I upgraded from i3 540 to i7 870. Cleared CMOS and good to go.But I saw performance decrease in windows. Like booting time, responses, etc.Does the i7 870 perform slow than i3 540?PS: I mainly use my pc for gaming so I'd like to know if I should use my i3 or i7
